Futuristic technology 9.

Futuristic Technology 9

For my final piece in my futuristic technology project, I decided to create a small robot that would move using cogs. I got a wooden frame and began to make the inside of it using the cogs and testing it to make sure each part moved at I wanted it too and without breaking. I then added the arms, I used two smaller pieces of wood that connected on a join for each arm, which I then further decorated to appear robotic. I added wire, circuit boards, chicken wire, and chargers. These arms would spin around when all the cogs spun, I used my previous work of the spinning arm to help with this. I then added the legs, also wooden pieces connected at the join, I then added multiple pieces of metal, more wires, and circuitry to create kneecaps and the legs appear mechanical. I then moved onto the head, I used a plug which I had cut the wire from for the shape of the head, adding magnets and smaller circles of wood for the features as well as copper wire on top of it. To counter-balance the weight of the head I added a battery at the back which then had smaller pieces of metal attached to it, this created the look of a battery pack which I then added wires coming from to make it appear as though it was the power source of the robot. When the bottom cog of the robot is spun, the arms will spin around and so will the head, creating the feel as though the robot comes to life.

I created a toy figure using various broken pieces from other figures and added cogs and wooden sticks to it. This was a small maquette to highlight a connection between man and mechanical parts. I then moved on from this and created another piece, this was a small box filled with cogs and wires, although none of the cogs could move, I made this as a small palette of sorts to display what I wanted to use to create other 3D pieces. I then created a piece using another part from a broken toy figure, this one I had attached to cogs and when moved the body would spin, this was the start of the mechanical and autonomy of the 3D pieces I would be creating. From this point I created another piece, I used a small wooden frame and added various cogs that would connect to each other so that when one of the cogs move, all of them would move, I then added a smaller version of an arm I had created in one of my previous pieces of work so that it would spin around to create the effect of a robotic joint. I then created a 3D arm using a cut off sleeve filled with newspaper and created a hand for it. I made the hand appear robotic using paint and adding other smaller bits to create the mechanical feel. I used the frame I had made previously and made it appear as though the hand was reaching through as though it was a portal from the future I had created and was coming through it.

I had taken apart a broken PSP to use the technological pieces inside for other pieces of work. I had then taken the front panel off and removed the screen from it. I then took other pieces of my work and photographed them with the PSP panel over them. This creates a technological feel for my work as it incorporates modern day technology with my vision of what future technology may look like. I had placed it over certain sections of my work so it was still recognizable of what it was even though it was a small crop of the original piece. I then further created another frame using bits of wood, i then decorated the frame with cogs, little bits, and wire, using the broken PSP screen to cover bits of the inside of the frame. I then also placed this over sections of my work, wich too created a more technological feel for the pieces as it displayed mechanical parts in additon to the already technology based pieces.

For this piece of work, I looked at various imaged of the human rib cage. I then drew out a rib cage to use for further pieces, I used pencil and didn't add any shading for this drawing as I didn't want it to be in depth as it wouldn't look good in additional pieces of work. I then took various pieces I had stores, including cogs, circuit boards and pictures of my other work. I then placed a picture of my previous work on a photocopier, with various pieces and then a drawing of a rib cage, but I had cut out pieces of it so you could see the stuff behind it. these images continue the representation of man mixed with a machine and create a nice effect as though the human organs had been replaced with technology. I then took the original drawing of the rib cage and worked on it further to create another piece. I had added made some of the ribs appear broken so you could see within the rib cage, I added wires and bits of metal supporting the ribs. I then added a mechanical heart and cogs within the rib cage and then broken off a lot of the ribs and created the appearance as though wires inside the ribs were holding bits together, including circuit boards that had also been strapped to the center and batteries that would power the technology.

For these pieces of work, I continued to mix together the human form and shape with robotic technology. Using a picture of a robot from the movie Transformers, I drew out half of the robots head, adding all details, and shading. I then took a picture of myself and printed it out. I took these pictures of myself and began to experiment, cutting pieces out and replacing them with the drawing of the robot I had done. I did this until I had two results I was happy with and wanted to sue in my work. I then took the two pieces I created and began to redraw them, adding in extra details where it was needed. I added crack effects to show that it was like the skin of the face had cracked and revealed the technology inside the head, creating a display as though I was a robot and had all different mechanical and technological parts within me.

I created a plaster cast in the shape of the human head and cracked into separate pieces to allow me to create multiple pieces of work. After cracking it I made different compositions that would make the work to appear more futuristic. I took pieces of the head shape out and in it, place put different technological parts and bits of wire and smaller pieces I had stored. I made different parts of the human face become a half cyborg, using cogs, chicken wire, circuit boards, and wires, I created the effect that this could be what humans could look like in the future. I made the appearance that after the piece of the face had broken off, the insides of the head had been revealed and that this is what will be in humans heads, covered by a mask, like a robot. the pieces looked like all the insides had exploded out and I like the effect it has created.

I used my previous work on the human form to create additional pieces. I took the shape of the human arm and hand that I had already used in multiple pieces and made them appear more futuristic. I had done research into different technological pieces and sued this research to help me in my work.  I manipulated the muscle structure and used the shapes to form wires running through the arm, this gave the appearance that the arm was made full out of tech and had no organic matter in it. I also create a drawing of a hand and made it cyborg esque by adding mechanical parts such as cogs and pistons within the arm that would allow it to move. I made the appearance on some of the pieces that the skin was, in fact, metal and that it was part robotic to create the futuristic look. I then decided to make some work in a 3D format. I used shaped and intertwined metal wire together to form the shape of the human arm and hand. This allowed me to have a 3D representation of the arm and hand that I can then use to help my understanding of the form and to try out different things on to create further work.
